Detailed plan for UPSC CSE-2017
My detailed plan follow the pattern as:
- Year
- Month
- Dates
- What to Do
So, here aspirant must start preparation for CSE 2017 from September 2016.
2016
September
- 1st week
- Analyze the reasons to join Civil services. Discuss to people selected as well as studying. Try to develope a long term vision- what the unique features the civil services has.
- If aspirant want to join coaching for GS portion then search for that coaching whose timing suits his/her need. Ideally : 3–4 hrs/maximum 4 days a week for coaching
- Take sufficient time to finalize the optional for mains.
- Start developing the habit of reading of the hindu news paper. Not as a part of study, just read whenever you get free time.
- Aspirant must be aware of UPSC syllabi (of prelims as well as for mains) so that he/she will get familiar with the types of sections aspirant have to read for UPSC preparation.
- 15–30th
- Finalize the coaching for GS part before the end of this month.
- Learn how to read The hindu news paper for UPSC preparation.
- Create 5 small notebooks/diaries one each for polity, economics, environment/ S & T and IR, Social. Segregate the news and note all the news into respective Notebook/diaries while reading newspaper.
2016
October
- 1–31st
- starts with two GS subjects in the month of July. At least the basics must be completed.
- Best combinations of two subjects to start with - (Geography + Economics) and (Polity + history )
- Aspirant can skip S&T in the beginning.
- for this whole month, starts thinking of the optional subject. finalize the coaching for optional subject if aspirant want to join. these issues must be worked out by the end of july
2016
November
- 1st 5 days
- the optional subject along with coaching must be finalized.
- Rest of the month
- Two GS subjects must have been done by now (First reading)
- now the three tasks are the continuous,; firstly, the newly decided optional subject is a new entrant to the study. thus, it has to be given major chunk of your time.
- secondly, along with the optional only one GS subject can be managed in tandem. take any suitable subject of GS, preferably the one that continues in coaching.
- Thirdly, by now you should be through with smart reading techniques of newspaper which will save your time at least by one hr on each day. this 1 hr you can spend on preparing for optional.
2016
December
- by the end of this year, aspirant must be through with 3 GS subjects, good advances should have been made in the realms of the optional subjects and newspaper study time should not exceed one hour.
2017
Jan/feb/march/april
Notification of CSE 2017 (Around 5 months period)
- By the arrival of notification, aspirant should have completed the 3 GS subjects remaining.
- the aspirant must have made way into more than half course of the optional subject.
- continuous reading of monthly magazine ‘Yojana’ from the month of Jan 2017.
- In this period, another newspapers should be introduced on consecutive days.
- In the month of may an aspirant must think of weather or not a test series is required for CSAT. if yeas, a coaching institute that has relevant papers must be selected for Test series supplements.
2017
June
- 1st Week
- the coaching classes for GS and the for optional subject must be brought to a halt, whether the course over there is pending or not. now is not the time for coaching but only self study.
- study of optional subject must be completely discontinued.
- the first CSAT paper, whether you give it in a coaching or at your premises, should be taken without any preparations. this is utmost necessary to identify your weakness-the critical areas - aspirant is required to work on these issues rather than deliberating on the whole course.
- 2nd/3rd/4th week
- Focus on improvement of comprehension of paper 2 of GS by the use newspaper. write the summary of any one article in any newspaper with 6–8 minutes, the summary should be 4th week approximately one third of the length of the original article. continue the practise for at least 20 days.
- one revision of at least 3 subjects of GS must be completed within the last three weeks of the month of june.
- Every week one complete CSAT paper must be given to analyse the perfomance. A list of weak topics must be prepared for both paper 1 & paper 2.
- if the CSAT paper is taken at the comfort of your room/house then the time frame should be contracted by 10 minutes, that is, maximum time allowed should be 1 hr 50 minutes only.
2017
July
1–31st
- the month of july has to be dedicated to the rest 3 subject revision of GS.
- This has to be maintained with the continuity of talking CSAT papers at least once a week.
2017
August
- Crash pre -2017
- The part of this month available before pre -2017 is critical.
- this half month or so is dedicated to attacking weaknesses which have been complied into a list by taking several CSAT papers earlier.
- frequency of CSAT papers must be increased to twice a week. the goal for this part of month is to stabilize the score at around ( 100 paper 1 + 130 paper 2). because the papers of coaching institute are tougher than that of the actual CSAT examination of UPSC, the score in the exam would generally increase that what an aspirant maintains in the coaching test series or at home.
- the timing of the papers must be adjusted such that an aspirant should not give any paper 4 days before preliminary examination.
- Day of Prelims 2017
- After the examination, an aspirant must not be apprehensive of his/her perfomance. Also, Indolence or tiredness must not come in way to check for the solutions released by the coaching institutes.

Other than these above mentioned NCERTs books, there are certain other books likeSocial & political life (6–8th), democratic politics; other books on world politics (of XI & XII) on polity. These books are good but for very basic understanding. if u have some basic idea about polity , just skip all these books because laxmikanth’s Indian polity book is the only one which covers almost all topics. if u dont have basics, u may go for all these, otherwise simply waste of time.
India and Contemporary World I & II ..(9 th & 10th ) + books on world history(11 & 12th ) : these contain huge stuff. relevant to upsc but not that much important. youcan skip.. if u get time then finish these two later.
Economy section : 9th & 10 th : very basics .. very thin.. may go for ..can finish both in one day..
11–12 th NCERTs are most important.
apart from all these books certain other books are required to cover some other topics related to main like world history, international relations, art & culture, security, ethics etc. primary objective must be to prepare from these all.
Make habit to read the Hindu. news relevant to UPSC only ..not like bollywood masala stuff etc..
